Breville Espresso Machines Espresso Machine Reviews

Breville BES900XL Dual Boiler semi-automatic espresso machine Review

The Good: If we had to pick one word to describe this espresso machine it would be: “Perfection!” Thanks to the Electronic PID temperature control, over-pressure valve and low pressure pre-infusion, it maintains precise temperature and pressure throughout extraction. The Breville Dual Boiler gives you the tools to customize your espresso to your personal specifications, with the ability to program shot temperature with precise PID temperature regulation technology, shot volume (1 and 2 cup), and pre-infusion duration and power. Simply put, make the best shot of espresso every single time.

The Bad: You will have to take this into a professional shop every two years if you want it descaled and decalcified. Otherwise, you will be using filters.

UPDATE – This problem is fixed in newer version(v2). You don’t have to take it into the shop for descaling, home descaling option added.

The Bottom Line: Despite any questions or drawbacks raised, the Breville BES900XL is the best semi-automatic espresso machine currently on the market in terms of both cost, efficiency and quality. It’s also fully programmable and easy to use. There is simply no way you can go wrong with this unit if you’re in the market for a semi-automatic dual boiler espresso machine.

Breville BES900XL Review

Breville BES900XL Dual Boiler Semi Automatic Espresso MachineThe BES900XL from Breville is a complete upgrade from the previous models, bringing dedicated professional quality double boilers to the consumer at affordable prices. This double boiler action allows for simultaneous extraction and steaming, meaning you get the perfect shot of espresso as long as your pressure is optimized. To that end, Breville has also added dual dedicated Italian espresso and steam pumps.

If it seems like Breville thought of everything here, they have. To bring the necessary limits to the extraction and over-pressure, the extraction pressure is completely regulated as is the water temperature thanks to the Electronic PID Temperature Controls. You get a precise water temperature and steam consistency with every shot your brew—simply turn the controls to your desired pre-set or self-made settings and start brewing. You can range from 190 to 205 degrees (displayable in C or F) and get consistently different roasts, blends and origins of espresso.

Consistent Programming for Consistent Ease and Quality

Actually, consistency is the name of the game here as shown by Breville’s unique Actively Heated Group Head which maintains the thermal stability in the unit throughout the entire extraction period. Everything is completely programmable so that you get exactly what you want every morning, noon and night, without fail.

Here’s a look at some of the better programmable features that really make the Breville BES900XL stand out from the crowd:

  • Volumetric Control – allows you to preset the volume in two cups at once while still allowing you to manually override or reprogram during the extraction and steaming process if you change your mind.
  • Pre-Infusion – Any espresso enthusiast knows that the way to really fine-tune the flavors in your brew is to alter the power and duration of your pre-infusion period. Now, imagine being able to program all of those different flavor profiles right into your espresso machine.

In addition, the limits, gauges and clocks all monitor over- and under-performance to ensure that the exact levels of precision are hit in each and every shot:

  • Pressure Gauge – ensures that the extraction pressure is constantly monitored for the perfect brew no matter what.
  • Shot Clock – keeps real time on the consistency of the extraction so that your espresso never falls flat or tastes “off”.
  • Backlit LCD – gives you an easy way to monitor the shot clock, the extraction temperature or your standard clock so you aren’t late for work!

Other Features that Make The Breville Espresso Maker Super-Convienent

Assuming that you get just what a consistent, programmable and easy-to-use marvel the BES900XL really is, let’s move on to some of the other features that should come standard in other espresso makers, but don’t. Luckily, Breville has added them in to move the bar of excellence one rung higher:

  • The auto-start function allows you to wake up or come home to the perfect shot of espresso without having to wait.
  • The swivel steam wand rotates at a full 360 degrees, giving you a full range of action with a 3-hole tip for super-silky texture to your drink.
  • A separate hot water outlet lets you preheat your cups or even please the Americano drinkers that might stop by your place for a cup of java.
  • The swivel foot that drops down from the espresso machine lifts the entire unit up off of the countertop so you can easily maneuver it around, pouring shots for all without inconveniencing any. Also allows for easy drippage cleanup.
